Looking for career ideas? It often pays to do some self-assessment. These are not the only ways to explore ideas, but they are a start:girl looking in mirror


Career Cruising
What it is:   An online tool to help you learn about career options.  It has an interest "test" as well as detailed descriptions of thousands of real, Canadian job roles, information about how to get there, and videos of people who work in those careers.  

Cost: FREE to Queen's students

Find it:  Career Services has a subscription to this website.  Please contact our Reception at 613-533-2992 to obtain the ID code and password, then proceed to www.careercruising.com

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)
What it is:  MBTI is one of the most well-known personality inventories in the workplace today.  It is NOT an interest test  but rather, is used in career advising as a way to help people clarify their personality preferences and work style.  It can help you fine-tune existing career options or ideas.

Cost:  $30 (for Queen's students)

Find it: Register with our Reception to obtain the questionnaire.  They will book you into an MBTI appointment to receive your results.  We also do MBTI workshops for large groups.  If you have a group (>20) and wish to have arrange an MBTI workshop, please contact us.

Strong Interest Inventory
What it is:  This questionnaire helps you get insight into your interests, preferences and personal style, thereby illuminating some possible fulfilling career choices.

Cost:  Please contact Student Wellness Services, below, for the latest fee information.

Find it:  Register at Student Wellness Services - Counselling Services to obtain the questionnaire.  They will book you into an appointment to receive your results.

What Colour Is Your Parachute?
What it is:  This is possibly the most famous career book going.   Contains valuable information about strategic and hopeful job search as well as exercises to help guide you toward fulfilling work.

Cost:   FREE (if borrowed from the library)

Find it:  Career Services has copies of this well-known book in our library.  Search our complete collection in QCAT.

Career Counselling Appointment
What it is:  a one-to-one appointment with a career advisor.  We can help you work on questions such as "what are my options?" and "how do I get from here to where I want to go?".

Cost:  FREE to currently-registered Queen's students and recent (< 1 year) alumni
